Shane understands the responsibility that comes with treasured footage. Every tape is treated as unique, carefully checked and returned after transfer.
Mouldy tapes can often be recovered. Broken tape can usually be repaired, and a damaged cassette can often be re-housed before transfer.

01Can you convert VHS and camcorder tapes to USB?
Yes. VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8 and Mini DV tapes can be transferred to MP4 video files on a USB memory stick. Your original tapes are returned after transfer.
02Where is the tape-transfer service based?
Old Mill Pictures is based in Kilkenny, Ireland. Call Shane to arrange drop-off, or to get the postal address before sending your tapes. Include your name and phone number with posted tapes.
03My tapes have white mould on them. Can they be saved?
Usually, yes. The quality can be affected depending on how severe the mould is, but many tapes remain very watchable and some recover almost perfectly.
04My tapes are broken or snapped. Can they be saved?
This is usually repairable. A broken tape can often be joined and a damaged cassette can be re-housed. Very sticky tapes can continue to break, but that is uncommon.
05How many hours will a memory stick hold?
A standard memory stick holds up to 60 hours of video. Larger options are available when a collection needs more space.
06How much does it cost?
The service costs €20 per hour of tape, plus €20 for each high-quality SanDisk USB memory stick supplied.
07Will I get my tapes back?
Yes. Every tape is returned to you after transfer.
08Where can I play the digital files?
The USB stick will plug into most modern televisions and computers. You can also copy, share and back up the MP4 files from a laptop.
09How will my video files be organised?
Each tape is numbered and matched to an MP4 file with the same number. Shane keeps dated labels in order where possible, and you can number the tapes yourself if you prefer a particular sequence.
10How long does it take?
Turnaround is normally one to two weeks, depending on the amount of tape and the time of year. It can take three weeks or more before Christmas, so early drop-off is recommended for gifts.
11Can I get multiple copies?
Yes. Extra copies are recommended if you will not make your own backups. Each additional high-quality SanDisk USB stick costs €20.
12How should I back up my digital videos?
Keep several copies in different places—for example on USB sticks, an external drive and secure cloud storage. No single digital device should hold the only copy.
13What kinds of tape can you transfer?
Consumer camcorder tapes and media including VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, Mini DV, DVDs, CDs and old hard drives. The service does not currently cover 8mm or 16mm film reels.
14Can I post my tapes?
Yes. Cushion them carefully with bubble wrap or newspaper and include your name and phone number. Call Shane first and he will send the postal address.
